Matthew Simmonds has an honours degree in history of art and architecture of the medieval period as well as a background in architectural stone carving and classical ornament carving in marble.
His small scale architectural spaces carved into solid stone are a real wonder. I just can't get enough of looking at them. The beauty, the precision, the detail, the light and the shadow in these sculptures speak of a real master. How I would love to look over his shoulder and observe how he does it. http://www.mattsimmonds.com/ John William Waterhouse (April 6, 1849 – February 10, 1917) was an English painter. His artworks were known for their depictions of women from both ancient Greek Mythology and Arthurian Legend. In total he produced 118 paintings. You can't be a fan a illustrated mythology and legend and not love J.W. Waterhouse. I once saw the original "Lamia" at the Auckland City Gallery, New Zealand. It was breathtaking. And then of course there is "Hylas and the Nymphs". One of my all time favourite paintings. In fact, if I could own one famous painting, it would be this. |
