Arnold Böcklin (1827-1902) was a Swiss symbolist painter. He was influenced by Romanticism and the subjects of his paintings were often mythological. He is best known for 'Die Toteninsel' (Isle of the Dead) of which he painted five versions between 1880 and 1886. I particularly like Version 3 which is one of my all time favourite paintings. Die Toteninsel (Isle of the Dead) became quite influential in the art world and inspired numerous other artists to paint their own versions of it. Below are three such works, one by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach and two by H.R. Giger.
