Dave Sandford

Dave Sandford is a Canadian photographer based in London, Ontario. Primarily covering professional sports in the past he's now moved into wildlife and landscape photography. The pictures here are from his series "The Great Lakes" capturing the incredible beauty of waves crashing into each other in the November storms over Lake Erie. The short shutter speeds turn these masses of water into abstractions I just love. And the light in them is magical. There are more of these fantastic images on his website plus much more.

Here is another one of those Victorian painters I like so much. Herbert James Draper (1963-1920) was a Classicist painter, born in London. In his early career he focused on mythological themes mainly from ancient Greece.

Arnold Böcklin

Arnold Böcklin (1827-1902) was a Swiss symbolist painter. He was influenced by Romanticism and the subjects of his paintings were often mythological. He is best known for 'Die Toteninsel' (Isle of the Dead) of which he painted five versions between 1880 and 1886. I particularly like Version 3 which is one of my all time favourite paintings.

The fourth version was destroyed in WWII and only a black and white photograph of it survives.

Versions by other artists

Die Toteninsel (Isle of the Dead) became quite influential in the art world and inspired numerous other artists to paint their own versions of it. Below are three such works, one by Karl Wilhelm Diefenbach and two by H.R. Giger.
